Before anyone reads your headline, sees your work or looks at your prices, they wait for your website to load. On a phone, on a busy road, on patchy data, every second of that wait is a chance for them to leave.

Speed is part of your brand

People don't separate the website from the business. A site that stutters feels like a business that might be hard to deal with. A site that appears instantly feels confident and cared for, before a single word is read.

Speed is part of your search ranking

Google measures how quickly pages load and respond, through what it calls Core Web Vitals, and uses them as a ranking signal. A fast site won't rank on speed alone, but a slow one makes every other effort work harder.

Five fixes worth asking for

  • Serve images in modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, at the size they are shown.
  • Load videos only when someone scrolls to them or presses play.
  • Remove plugins and scripts nobody uses any more.
  • Use a content delivery network so pages come from a server near your visitor.
  • Test on a real mid-range phone, not only on an office laptop.

Where to start

Run your homepage through Google's free PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score first. If it is in the red, the fixes above are usually the quickest wins. If you'd like a second opinion, we're happy to take a look.
